Coaching is a professional discipline that involves a coach working with the client to identify their passions and visions in life and working in a formal and structured way to fulfill the client’s potential and achieve these goals.
Coaching draws on many associated disciplines and is largely defined by being forward looking and solutions focused with self-directed learning being one of the key drivers.
It is often likened to having a personal trainer where the client is encouraged to stretch himself or herself and move out of their own comfort zone. The coach is there to guide, encourage and manage the process. As with working out in the gym or on a track, almost all of the hard work comes from the client.
The process typically happens over a three-month period with 12 weekly sessions. A well defined structure is followed involving goal setting, strategies and actions. Ideally the trial session (the first session) would be conducted face to face although this is not necessary. Subsequent sessions may be conducted over the phone which provides for a surprisingly intimate and focused engagement.
