Buying furniture in Singapore

If you did not move your complete household and need to buy (new) furniture in Singapore you can of course go to the omnipresent IKEA or its maybe lesser known competitor Courts, if you have some more time to look or a different taste from the 'Scandinavian' you will be able to find nice things here, from modern to antique to 'new-colonial'.

There is a lot of furniture here being imported from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and China. Often hand made, new or ‘renovated’ in a large number of styles. Do take your time and check-out different places, there are some specialised furniture malls but there are also a number of ‘stand-alone’ shops. The malls include Park-Mall along Penang Road (near Orchard), The Furniture Mall, behind the Park Plaza Hotel along Beach Road and IMM in Jurong East. These malls offer a large variety of shops and styles of both furniture and fixings. A cluster of furniture shops selling mainly wood articles can be found at Dempsey Road. Besides these places you will be able to find many shops all around, specialising in anything from Japanese Tatami's to pottery.

Prices are probably reasonable to cheap for most of you but if you are looking for even better deals you may want to pop over to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, many of the shops there will arrange transport to Singapore and all.

Do take note of the fact that not everything that is cheap is necessarily of bad quality but be a bit careful anyway.

Another option is looking for items being sold by leaving or moving expatriates, you tend to not always move everything back and on the notice boards of the supermarkets in ‘expat areas’ there is always a number of items being offered. Alternatively there are the garage-sales or you can try our online version of it on our e-pinboard.

If you are looking for something particular, or a certain style you can also post your question on the board and we, or one of our readers, may be able to help you.
