Your first night(s) in your new country, how will you spend them? That will depend highly on how long you have travelled, how jet-lagged you are, how many kids you have with you and what arrangements are made. If your company has made all the arrangements already you can probably skip this.
It is likely you will spend the first few nights in a hotel or serviced apartment, even if a house / apartment has been arranged at some point you may have to wait for your goods to arrive or to furnish it before you move in. A hotel is convenient for a limited number of days, a serviced apartment for a bit longer till indefinite. We hope to be able to offer you some good deals here in future but for now we only have some bits of advice.
If you are alone:
After you arrive, throw your things down, have a shower, call in at your employer (but don’t go yet), walk around a bit, have a good diner and a drink (but don’t get drunk) and immediately go to the office the next day, you’re not on holiday!
If you are with your spouse:
After you arrive, throw your things down, have a shower (together), call in at your employer (but don’t go yet), walk around a bit, have a good diner and a drink (but don’t get drunk), have a good nights sleep and spend the next day shopping with your spouse for all the stuff you forgot for this climate, then go to the office the next day and throw yourself at the job.
If you are with spouse and kids, 2 options;
1) go to the office immediately
2) see “If you are with your spouse” above and delete the "(together)".
By the way, for those of you who are considering number 1) above, and it can be attractive, we suggest you also read our piece on "Bridging the culture gap".
