If you come from the States or Western Europe and are not in the very highest salary ranges you are probably used to a certain amount of DIY work (if you are not; just skip this page and look for something else interesting on the site). In Singapore doing it yourself is not that common. There are a number of DIY shops but their stock may be quite a bit more limited than what you are used to. This is probably in large part due to the fact that ‘having things done’ is comparatively cheap in Singapore, labour and material costs are not that high.
If you are an avid do-it-yourselver you may consider bringing some of your tools along. If they are power tools note that Singapore uses 220V AC and ‘British’ three-prong plugs so you may have to change the plugs or make an adaptor chord.
Note that because Singapore imports almost anything from anywhere there is also a variety of different types and sizes around for plugs, pipes, bolts etc.
If you are bringing your bikes (they are cheap to buy here, China-made) be sure you also bring your tools and spares.
