If you want to dive you will first have to get an Open Water Certificate that will allow you to dive safely and independently. A name you will often hear in this respect is PADI, check here for their info on open water diving courses.
Our recommendation; go to Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia) and get your 'open water' with Borneo divers at the islands in front of the coast, Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine park.
If you have finished your 4-day course and are still enthusiast you can book a trip to Labuan or Sipadan which are some of the better diving spots near KK (see the where to dive page).
If you already have your certificates and only need to look for some kit you should drop by the Concourse on Beach road where several diving shops have congregated, if you also like fishing there happen to be a number of tackle shops across the road from the Concourse.
