Disclaimer: Sorry to start with this but we don´t want any misunderstandings; This page touches on the oldest profession in the world and though we are not going to be crass or explicit we advice you not to read on if you are not interested in, or easily shocked by this aspect of life. We know quite a number of you expatriates are in sales or purchasing and as may get a ´taste´ of the below while conducting your business, its as good a reason as any to read this anyway. As briefly stated on our Nightlife page Singapore is no longer the lewd and lawless place of days gone by (aren't we poetic) but prostitution is not against the law in Singapore. Soliciting and making a nuisance of yourself however is and this is the way in which excesses are dealt with and the main tourist centre kept looking clean. The fact that a lot of the foreign girls involved in this business are here on a social or tourist pass also helps the police to keep things in check.
The law (in brief)
We are no legal people here but according to the Interpol website "The legal age of consent for sexual activity is sixteen (16) years". As mentioned already prostitution appears not to be illegal but certain sexual activities are. Until recently this included oral sex (though not if it was foreplay leading to regular intercourse, go figure). This caused a small scandal in 2004 involving a police officer and the laws were seen as archaic and finally revised but NOT, after heated debate, between people of the same gender, see also further below.
So what is the score then;
As advertised
If you look in the yellow pages under ´escort service´ you will find a number of agencies that deliver social escorts or massage escorts. Though there could be some real ´social´ escorts here it seems pretty obvious what all this is about. Similarly a look under 'massage' or at some massage ads will yield such names as ´white thong massage´, 'silk skin' or 'BJ' advertising massages by ´exotic´, young and pretty girls, so no 180 pound guy with muscles of steel who will give you a medically certified massage. (By the way, the names are not real but close enough, just being cautious of a slander suit.)
A night on the town
There are plenty of places in town where you can ´bump into´ a girl and in a number the girls are likely to bump into you. The most well-known of these is Orchard Towers where there are a number of pubs (the names change) where the girls do not intend to leave alone. There are places with mainly Philippinas, Thai or Indonesians but that is not exactly advertised at the door so have a beer and find out. Also note that there are some ´girls´ of questionable sexuality around here sometimes. Other places can be a bit more upmarket and a little less conspicuous and you may also find some caucasian girls there. Problem in these places might be that the girls are not always ´professional´ but do expect a ´gift´ after a 1-night stand.
In some pubs and especially Karaoke bars where you might end-up with a client, girls are employed to keep you drinking and get (expensive) drinks bought for them. Nothing new here and whether any of them would want to go any further depends on the individual.
If you are a man of the world you´ll figure it all out soon enough, if you are not then forget about it or take the risk of a slap across the face.
Straight buy
There are a considerable number of brothels in the ´Designated Red-light Area´s´, or DRA´s, the best known being Geylang area (Orchard Towers is actually another). These are generally recognizable at night by the larger and better illuminated house numbers. An ´advantage´ of these establishments is that the girls get regular health checks and even carry a card to prove so. Where you should go as a foreigner? Really, your cabby (or maybe doorman), will know better than we (really).
Homosexuality
Some parts of Asia are known as a haven for those with a different sexual orientation. Singapore in some senses however is (still) a very conservative society and homosexuality is certainly not accepted by the mainstream. As a foreigner this may not bother you as you won't run into too many aunties but though the law does allow homosexuality it does not allow consummation of the relation ...
Lastly; do use your brains; have safe sex.
