XpatXperience / Lifestyle / Breaks in Malaysia

Malaysia is just around the corner and will offer you a number of possibilities. The Malaysian Ringit is less then half the value of the Singapore Dollar and you will pay less ringits then dollars for most items. Most of you won't need a visa and West-Malaysia can be reached by car, there is nothing to stop you!

Beach / Diving outings
If you just want a break from it all and hang around the pool and the beach for a couple of days and maybe do some snorkeling or diving these are some options:
  • Tioman (West Malaysia); take a ferry, bus or plane and enjoy a quiet and still comparatively un-spoilt Island that still has all facilities. Lie by the pool, get a massage, go snorkeling and eat some good food. You can do it all, from basic to relatively luxurious.
  • Penang (West Malaysia); Maybe a bit far for a regular weekend but Penang has some nice beaches, some hills, some temples and good food. Hotels from basic to luxury, a real nice getaway.
  • Desaru beachDesaru (West Malaysia); For a short while of doing nothing ... because there is really nothing much to do. Only an hour away from Singapore, take the ferry at Changi Ferry Terminal to Belungkor and the hotel will shuttle you further. Desaru faces the South China sea and is surrounded by palm plantations. A hotel like the Pulai will have a little spa, a bar, some restaurants and, important for the kids, a pool all else you can do is relax.
  • Kuching (East Malaysia); Kuching is a charming small town surrounded by jungle. You can book trips to see Orang Utang's and other natural wonders, have some forest hikes or sit at the beach. Again nice for a couple of days.
For more details on diving also check our 'diving from Singapore' pages.
Shopping / Clubbing
  • Kuala Lumpur (West Malaysia); KL, for short, is not Singapore and it is not Bangkok either, you'll either love it or not but there is definitely no shortage of shopping malls, decent to good hotels and pubs and clubs. A good way to get rid of some surplus energy or cash.
