The British Community in Singapore

Welcome to Singapore

It may appear strange to have a British community page; the whole site is in English to start with is it not? But (improper) English happens to be the lingua franca and that does not mean the site necessarily caters to you, the British Expatriate.

Singapore shares part of its history and much of its 'modern heritage' with Britain. The Empire's influence can be seen in the architecture, the street names (from Coronation Street to Holland Avenue, and yes; the latter is very English indeed) and the ever present Stamford Raffles but all this only goes so far.

In any case, there is still a fair number of Brits around and you can look forward to an active social life, if you are so inclined.

Social
For social acivities, 'getting to know's' and other information on the happenings of the community take a look at the following sites:

Union JackThe British Club for British and non-British

Welsh flagSt. David's Society of Singapore for the Welsh

English flagThe Royal Society of St. George for the English

Union JackThe British Association of Singapore

Another possibility to meet people, both British and local, may be the
Union JackThe British Alumni (Singapore) society for UK graduates residing in Singapore.

Nor just for the British but useful nonetheless:

Apart from these institutions and societies there are also a number of 'Victorian' pubs and the like and you will find 'bangers and mash' on many menus as well as a number of varieties of fish & chips. The Indian curries here though are not quite what they are in Britain we have heard.

Business
Trading-hub Singapore has a large number of foreign business associations, chambers of commerce etc. You may wish to visit:

A full listing of other associations and chambers can be found in our Singapore business contacts listing.

Schooling
There is no 'British School' like there is the Australian, Hollandse etc. but there is the Tangling Trust School that "provides premier British-based schooling for expatriate students in Singapore aged three to 18". Please take a look at our schools listing for more information on other (international) schools.

Diplomatic Missions
Please refer to our Embassies listing.

Post/Telephone
It is not terribly expensive to call to Europe (including the UK) from Singapore. There are a number of telecoms supliers and there are different rate structures but a 'standard cheap' rate on a fixed line is S$0.39 per minute, more details on telecoms and costs in general can be found elsewhere on this site.
(Normal) Letters are between 5 and 10 working days on their way, sending a standard letter costs 1.10 Singapore Dollar.
